What kind of work do you do?
We are professional artists who make paintings by hand from your photos. We draw a variety of subjects
including people, pets, houses, cars, boats, landscapes, etc of many styles including oil, watercolor,
color pencil, charcoal pencil, pastel, etc. We also do photo retouches for our customers.
|
Why is a painting so special from the photo?
A painting is a genuine piece of art work made by hand by a highly talented professional
artist, which is unique and not reproducible, so you have the only copy in the world. It has much more sentimental
and collectible values and will oftentimes be passed to generations as a family heirloom. On the contrary, photos
are generic and you can print another copy easily for just a few cents.
|
Why is the hand-made painting so special from printing photo
onto canvas?
There is nothing wrong with printing your photo onto canvas and it is much cheaper to make. But it is nothing more
than an enlarged photo, easily reproducible with little human talents involved. A piece of hand-made art has the
artist's superb craftsmanship and relentless pursuit of perfection distilled into it while a computer print just has
the color ink sprayed onto it by an electronic device, producing the identical copy.
|
What can I use the painting for?
It is the most unique and memorable gift for occasions such as
- Christmas
- Birthdays
- Wedding Anniversaries
- Remembrance of loved ones who passed away
- Wedding
- Baby shower
- Mother's Day
- Father's Day
- Valentine's Day
- Graduation
- Retirement
Many people make paintings for their own house and office decorations or simply as their art collection.
|
How much experience do your artists have?
Most artists have decades of experience drawing paintings by hands. Most do
specialize in particular styles and particular subjects, for example, watercolor dogs, oil paintings of
kids, pencil sketches of houses, etc. Our job is to match the most qualified and experienced artist with
the strength in the style and subject of your painting.
|
How do you protect my privacy?
We will not use your photo or painting in any way unless you give us explicit permission to do so.

- Oil paintings take 1-2 weeks to draw, depending the size and complexity. Watercolor and pencil sketches take
3-5 days to draw. The policy of our order queue is "first come, first serve", so the average waiting time is
about a week. If you would like to opt Express Service, there is no waiting and your painting will be started
right away after ordering.
- The above turnaround is for regular seasons. Before Christmas, the turnaround will be longer since there are
too many orders placed for the holiday. Sometime within a month to Christmas, there will be a cut-off date for
orders requiring Christmas delivery.

Photo Selection and Submission |
How can I send you my photo?
|
How can I email you my paper photo?
You need to scan it into your
computer first. If you have a scanner connected to your computer, scanning should be simple. Put the photo face down on
a corner on the glass, lower the cover and press the scan button, then the image should be loaded to your computer by
the scanner software. Then email the photo as an attachment. Call us if you need help. If you don't have a scanner, you
can go to a local photocopying store. Usually for a small fee, they can scan it for you.
|
Can I send in reference pictures besides the main picture?
Yes, please do. Reference pictures are always very helpful to provide more details and views from different
angles.
|
Can you make a painting by picking subjects from several pictures?
Yes. In fact, we are very good at it. We will make the merging so smooth that viewers would think the subjects
actually were together taking the portrait. Depending on the complexity level, there may be a minor charge.
Confirm that with your art associate. |
What if I don't have everyone in one photo?
We can pick subjects from separate photos and merge them into one painting. Using this technique, we did the
following creative projects,
- Family portraits where family members were never together taking a group photo
- A grandfather holding his grandson he never met
- Portraits of two of a customer's beloved dogs who lived 20 years apart and never together
- Portraits of a grandfather, father and son in military all at the same age (WWII, Vietnam war and Iraq war)
- Portraits of you with any celebrity, public figures, spiritual icons and anyone else as long as you have
a photo
|
Can you change the clothes of a person?
|
Can you change the background of the painting?
Yes. We can either remove the messy background to keep it clean and simple with some soft color of your
preference. Please click the links below to view samples.
http://www.giftaportraitpainting.com/oil-portrait.php
We can also draw a new background of your choice behind the main figures.
|
Can you draw my black-and-white photo into a color portrait?
|
What background do you recommend?
For portraits, usually simple and plain backgrounds work the best because they focus the viewer's
attention on the main characters. So we recommend a soft color of your preference or very light shading.
|
Can you make my black-and-white photo into a sepia or
mono-color portrait
|
Do you do oil paintings in black and white?
|
Can you restore a really poor quality or even damaged vintage photo?
Yes. We may need some reference pictures to see facial features more clearly.
|
Can you remove someone from my photo?
Yes. That is easy. We just don't draw that person.
|
Can you add someone new to my photo?
Yes. It is like merging multiple pictures together as explained before.
|
Can you change the theme of my house from winter to summer?
Yes. We can add leaves to trees, change snow to green lawn, change the color of buildings, etc.
based on your request. |
Can you add words or a sentence on the painting?
Yes. We can add it anywhere you want, in any colour and any font as long as you can provide
an image reference of the font. |
Can you turn people around an angle or raise his head?
No. This is what we can not do. It is possible for us to move things or faces around in
a two-dimensional way. But when we turn someone's face, there are too many parts that will change. It is
impossible to know someone's face looks like from a different angle and due to the concern of losing likeness,
we can neither turn faces and bodies left / right nor up / down. We recommend you to find another picture with
the desired orientation of face and body. |
Can you change the hair/eye color?
|
Do you offer advice on how to pick the photo to be drawn?
Vital factors
- The image is clear not blurred
- The resolution is large (4"x6" paper or 400x300 digital)
- The faces are under good lighting, not in a shadow
- The facial expressions and orientations are right
Not important factors
- Background
- Clothes
- Eye and hair colors
- Things to be removed
|
What attentions should I pay for merging pictures together?
- Make sure the lighting on faces from separate pictures are close
- Make sure the relative height of people are correct
- Make sure the relative sizes of pets are proportional
- Make sure the background looks natural and suitable with the subject
|
Can I send you special instructions?
Please do. Send as many and be as particular as you want. We want you to have your own ideas of how the painting should be drawn. There are physical limitations that we will communicate with you when we can not do it the way you wish but our goal is to make sure the painting comes out as close as possible toward your vision and preference. Either leave a note in the order or send us an email about the instructions. Please send in all instructions before we start the painting because once the painting is completed, only minor adjustments will be possible. |

When should I choose the oil painting?
Oil paintings are very precise in details and work well with all kinds of photos, especially with human faces. It is more formal and impressive, best suitable for the prominent location above the fireplace, the house entrance or above the sofa in the living room or dining room.
Pros
The rich colors resemble the real person or scene almost perfectly. The oil paints are mixed first, so any color is possible. Also the painting brush is very fine and once the paint falls on the canvas, it doesn't spread around. All these make it possible for very fine details to be vividly brought out.
Oil paintings use custom framing, so there are more choices and frames tend to be more impressive.
They last longer. All the European masterpieces like Mona Lisa last hundreds of years.
Cons
Oil paintings look so real that sometimes they look just like the enlarged photographs. When you stand closely, you still see the brush strokes and different layers of paints but when you step back, it looks so perfect that you might think that is a photo. However, we can add some impressionistic style in or make the brush strokes deliberately more pronounced. You need to request these special treatments.
They tend to be more expensive
Custom framing tends to be more expensive
They take longer to make.

|
